A print-on-demand design can have perfect colors, sharp resolution, and the correct aspect ratio—and still print incorrectly if important elements are placed outside the safe area. Text may be cut off, borders may look uneven, or an unwanted white edge may appear after trimming.

What Is Bleed?

A provider might specify bleed as a measurement in inches, millimeters, or pixels. It may also provide a downloadable template showing the complete print area and safe zone.
Always begin with the provider’s current product template or file requirements. Do not assume that two products from the same company use identical measurements.
To convert a physical bleed measurement into pixels, multiply the bleed in inches by the required DPI.
For example:
0.125 inches × 300 DPI = 37.5 pixels

How to Prepare a Design Correctly
Start by creating your canvas at the print provider’s complete required dimensions, including any required bleed.
Extend background colors, photographs, textures, and repeating patterns all the way to the outer edge of the canvas. Do not leave an unprinted gap around the trim line.
Next, identify the safe area and keep all essential content inside it. Leave additional breathing room when possible, especially around personalized names, dates, small lettering, or faces.
Before exporting, hide or remove template guides unless the provider specifically instructs you to include them. Trim lines, safe-area boxes, and measurement labels should not appear in the finished print file.
Export the design using the provider’s recommended file type, color settings, pixel dimensions, and resolution.
Product-Specific Safe-Area Considerations
Different POD products create different placement risks.
- Mugs and Tumblers
Important content can wrap around the sides and become difficult to see from the front. Keep text and focal elements away from the handle, extreme edges, and curved portions unless the wraparound effect is intentional.
- Shirts and Fabric Products
Fabric can shift slightly during printing and sewing. Avoid placing thin borders close to the edge of an all-over-print panel. Keep important details away from seams, collars, cuffs, and other construction areas.
- Blankets
Blanket edges may be trimmed, hemmed, or sewn. Background designs should extend fully through the bleed, while names, quotes, and faces should remain well inside the safe area.
- Wall Art and Canvases
Canvas prints may wrap artwork around the sides of the frame. Determine whether the provider uses image wrap, mirror wrap, or a solid-color edge. Keep important subjects away from any portion that will wrap around the frame.
- Stickers and Die-Cut Products
The cut line follows the shape of the design. Leave enough space between the cut line and essential artwork so that small cutting variations do not remove part of the image or create an uneven border.
Why Thin Borders Are Risky
Thin borders make even a tiny production shift easy to see. If trimming moves slightly in one direction, one side of the border may appear thicker than the other.
When a border is necessary, make it thick enough to tolerate normal movement and keep it well inside the safe area. For edge-to-edge designs, extending the background through the bleed usually produces a more forgiving result than placing a narrow frame near the trim line.
